Community Banking

As the biggest Community Banker in the UK, HBOS has invested more than £8 million in Community Development Finance Initiatives.  Many of the projects have also levered Government funds on the basis of HBOS seed funding.

The capital HBOS provides enables Community Development Finance Initiatives to on-lend to social enterprises and small businesses that otherwise would not be able to access credit.

Our Community Banking provides credit facilities of almost £130m to new or growing not- for- profit organisations in the UK for a variety of social purposes.

Examples of the work Community Banking has carried out in partnership with local finance companies over the past five years include East Lancashire Moneyline (ELM) and Mercian Housing Association.

ELM provides access to credit and debt advice for low income families and individuals in Blackburn who are unable to access mainstream credit.

Mercian Housing Association in the West Midlands, using a similar system to that offered to ELM, offers its tenants a savings account and linked, affordable credit facilities.

HBOS is a market leader in social banking, and is the only bank to publish a target 15% - for new social banking accounts.
