Perth United Banking Company (1766-1787)

Perth, 1820s by John Clark

Perth in the 1820s by John Clark

Between 1763 and 1765, six small banking companies were formed in Perth, including the Perth Banking Company (1763), the Tannerie Banking Company (1764), McKeith, Rintoul and Co. whose notes carried the King's head, another whose notes carried the Bruce Crest and Motto (after John Bruce the principal partner) and the Craigie Banking Company.

Following the passing of the Bank Act in 1765, (which prevented the issue of banknotes for under £1), these six companies amalgamated to form the Perth United Banking Company, which began business on 6th May, 1766.  This company went into voluntary liquidation after a 21 year period in compliance with the partnership agreement.

Please refer to the Perth Banking Company  history page for the subsequent history of the company.
